The Escape That Fooled Alcatraz

Alcatraz was supposed to be escape-proof. Then three prisoners said “hold my beer”.

In 1962, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin broke out using a homemade drill, some fake heads and a raft made from stolen raincoats.

For decades, nobody knew if they survived. Then, in 2015, a photo surfaced showing two men in Brazil who looked suspiciously like the Anglin brothers. It was dismissed by some because the photo came from Fred Brizzi, a career criminal and known drug smuggler.

But in 2020, facial-recognition technology was used to analyse the image, with AI specialists concluding that the men were indeed John and Clarence.

So perhaps Alcatraz wasn't quite as escape-proof as advertised.
