A wave is a disturbance that travels across space. Waves transfer energy, not matter. A wave causes a change in some equilibrium level as it passes by. Waves that have a repeating pattern are called periodic waves. The frequency of a periodic wave is how many wave cycles are generated in some amount of time. Wavelength is the distance from the beginning of one wave cycle to the beginning of the next cycle. Amplitude is the maximum change from equilibrium caused by a wave.
