Sound is a compression wave. Sound waves require a matter medium (solid, liquid, or gas) to travel through, and cannot travel through vacuum. The amplitude of a sound wave corresponds to its loudness. The frequency of a sound wave corresponds to its pitch. The speed of a sound wave depends on the medium its traveling through. Sound waves exhibit wave behaviors like reflection, which are useful in a variety of applications.
