If a system is isolated so that no energy is enters or leaves the system, the total amount of energy in the system remains the same over time. Energy may convert between kinetic and potential, but the total amount is constant. If energy is transferred into or out of the system, the total energy of the system does change. Energy often transfers out of systems as sound and thermal energy.
